Breaking out of Space: Aaradhna Refuses Her Award
This past VNZMA was marked by Aaradhna realness by staying true to the message of her song " Brown Girl" for which was acclaimed under the label of Hip Hop/Urban music. She refused the award and passed it along to fresh talent that can actually be deemed as Hip Hop. In doing so, she rebukes the notion of labeling music by all brown people as a unit regardless of esthetics and style. Remember when all black musicians in the United States were labeled as "RnB" artists even if they were playing rock? Well, apparently this type of dismissal of uniqueness and creativity is still happening. Of course, "urban" as a label isn't used to block musicians of color from the airwaves as flagrantly as they were in the 60's, but it clearly diminishes artists' efforts and limits the ways in which recognition can be attributed.
